The best and most important part of a startup

There is no question that the most important part of a startup is your team.

Your team determines your company culture, the market you tackle, and the product you build. Your team affects why customers choose to work with you, why investors fund you and why future employees will join you.

Put together the right team and magic will happen. Pick the wrong team, and it doesn’t matter how individually talented you are, it won’t work.

But not only is the team most important to the startup’s success, being part of a great team is the best part of working at a startup.

I couldn’t imagine doing this journey alone. Not only would it be awful, it would be impossible.

Startups aren’t just hard technically, they can be emotionally draining too. It’s hard to talk about the struggles of a startup with someone who isn’t living it too.

At SeamlessMD, where we are operating in the healthcare enterprise market that is traditionally resistant to change, it is undoubtedly an uphill climb.

But climbing a really steep hill isn’t so bad when you’re surrounded by the right people. In fact, it’s better than that. There’s something special about overcoming incredible challenges together with the right group of people. That’s an experience you never forget.

A few weeks ago I had a conversation with a VC, and he asked, “If you guys fail, what would be the number one reason why?”

I said, “We have an incredible team. These guys are so smart, so driven, so talented. If we fail, it’ll be because we didn’t work hard enough. Because we didn’t want it badly enough. This team is too good to fail for any other reason.”

And I really believe that.

Jon, Mike, Phil and Willie – I couldn’t have asked for a better team.

Big things are coming, and it’s only going to get harder, but I know as a team we’re more than capable.
